I've decided I'm going to keep track of a few food items over the next few months to observe how those item's costs are escalating.
We're fortunate in that we are retired military and have more than 2 installations in town where we can shop. I do fill in shopping at our neighborhood HEB during the month for fresh fruits and vegetables. I was in HEB the other day and was mouth hanging open shocked at the cost of coffee (almost $11 for a 2lb can - OMG)!
This is a random sampling of items I purchased today.
Folgers Black Silk Coffee (2lb containter) 8.99
Lays Kettle Chips 2.23
Large White Bread Loaf 1.25
Large Brown Eggs (dozen) 2.19
Sweet Onions (per lb) .50
Russet Potatoes (per lb) .39
24 Roll TP (Angel Soft) 4.79
Cinnamon Raisin English Muffins 1.89
Wheat Thin Veggie Crackers 2.24
Smuckers Strawberry Preserves 2.29

I've been keeping a price list spreadsheet for several months now so that I can keep track of prices on items at various stores and recognize a great deal when I see one, and I love knowing that I'm getting the most bang for my buck and not paying more than I need to for the same item. Luckily, the cheap store near me is actually wonderful, usually has the best prices (and I know when they don't, thanks to my anal price list), and they pay me back $0.06 per reusable bag that I bring in when I shop (it's a no frills, bag it yourself kind of place), and I believe in pennies adding up to dollars. Still it saddens me that prices of essentials like groceries, particularly healthier items, continue to go up while paychecks for lots of folks either stay the same (or, worse, just plain go away entirely for months on end). We live in a very scary time. If I make it to my 5 year plan of owning a home, I intend to grow as much of my own food as possible, just in case.
We do live in a very scary time! In the last 2 weeks, I've heard the "D" word, THE "D" WORD!!! I've heard recession for months now but hearing the "D" word scares the bejesus out of me. I don't even want to realistically think about this country suffering through another DEPRESSION.
This is yet another reason I'm glad I'm not young anymore, trying to raise a family, trying to provide for their future and education.
Tell me about it! We're looking into the option of paying for our children's college education now at today's prices. They'll be able to attend any state school in the state of IL. The only thing stopping us the unsureness of it all. It's a great deal, but what if they don't want to go or really want to go out of state? What if we can talk them into the community college here for two years before going away so that they can go away to school more mature and sure of what they want to study? Ugh.
I've wondered that exact issue Lynda. Even though it's been a long while since my kids were in college, I've seen this "savings plans" come out even here in Texas about the same thing as you are describing for Illinois. Neither one of my kids opted for a state supported school and would not have been happy had that been their only alternative.
As for being ready to "go away to college", that depends on each child, everyone is different.
You have some expensive decisions ahead of you, all of which I don't envy.
I feel you I live in the DC metro Area.
I went to our local Giant(My wife not me I hate Giant) purchase 26 items for $97.78 that included our Bonus Card Savings...what a joke..especially the Bonus Cards...You should blog about how much of a rip off those Bonus Cards Are...
