After almost 17 years with our current mattress, it's time, no, it's past time to purchase a new one. I've known for quite some years that we needed to do this, when I start sleeping like arse every single night and the pressure points keep me awake...........give it up, get a new mattress. I'm drawn to the idea of the temperature-pedic but some reviewers say it's hot - Yuck, I don't like hot. Then there is the Select Comfort Beds, kinda like blow-up beds where you can adjust each side differently, don't know how long those would last without the rubber wearing thin and BOOM one night in the middle of love making - Yikes!!!
On a serious note, I want a king size, not too firm, not to soft, a pillow top that will stay a pillow top.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Of course I won't go out and buy solely on your advice but I'd look at the beds you suggest.
And then pillows............like down and medium fill - any good brands come to mind?

My Parents have select comfort beds. They had one in their motorhome also. Mom says you need to replace them just like a normal mattress about every 10 not 17 hee hee hee. I now that feeling you described. I will ask mom if she has anything else you may need to know about select comfort beds. Later girl
Girl, if you want to sleep like a baby, you need a Select Number bed. Yes, they are expensive, but go to the mall in Austin and lay on one. Instant relaxation. You can get the pillowtop too.
I have a bad back and this bed has saved my life. Only one problem, I do not leave this bed. My husband and I hang out in it. I do my computing, we watch tv, read, eat, you name it. It is that comfortable. They have a 30 day try it policy, too.
We bought our daughter a Tempurpedic. I love it. It weighs a ton, but it is so comfortable! We got two pillows as well, I use one on my bed and it's so comfortable.
If I had the money, I'd go for a Select Number bed myself - especially with my bad back. Of course what you really need to do is go try a few out and see what feels best to you as you're the one who's going to have sleep in for the next ... uhm, 17 years??
Actually we are going to try some out but how much real trying can you do at a store, seems to me the only real way to try it out is to actually sleep in it - fat chance that's going to happen!
How do you test out a bed really? What should you look for and look at?
If you get a Select Comfort bed, are you going to share your "sleep number" with us?
nice write up. I enjoy every write up overhere. Hope to dropby again reading. Have a nice day too..
darn, i don't know the name of my bed, but i like it...it's just what you described, king sized, pillow top.
go to the store and lie down on a few, roll on them (take hubby) and see what's comfortable.
i love my freaking bed! ahhhh
Wow! 17 Years! Our last mattress started to feel like crap after just a few years LOL. I have a bad back and don't sleep well often anyways, I almost always sleep on a heating pad. I would love to try one of those sleep number ones, but they're definitely not in our budget.
Not sure if you guys have this store down there, Sleep Country, if you do go there, they are awesome. We just bought new mattresses from there when we moved and I will never buy from anywhere else again, the prices and service were fantastic. And they have comfort guarantee, I can't remember how many days, but something like 2 or 3 months, if you're not completely satisfied with the mattress they will exchange it for you.
If you don't have Sleep Country there, try to find a store that has a guarantee like that, then you get a chance to try it out at home and make sure it's the right kind of mattress for you.
I haven't found a mattress that I like yet, so I can't give you any advice. I really like your blog : )
Sleep Number beds are now offering pressure point analysis in their stores. I am not sure how that works, but if you have a bad back, you should be able to determine if Select Comfort is for you.
It is the best money I spent. I am 65 and my husband is a 40.
We went out yesterday (Friday) looking and found that we were not at all impressed with Sleep Number, or Temperapedic (I was a little disappointed that I didn't like either). We found a Sterns and Foster we liked but this particular mattress was all that was left as they are no longer making it. We also liked a Serta BeautyRest Black Edition - Nice! These are still oh so expensive though - I'm having a difficult time swallowing paying $3,500 for a king mattress - Yeeee Gads!!! We will continue to shop come Monday.
MamaFlo,
We recently moved and bought new bedroom furniture and mattress. We were determined to get a more comfortable mattress than the previous one we had had for 14 years and we made the rounds and tried out every type of mattress on the market and did all the homework. We eventually bought a Sleep Number Bed. Yes, they are much more expensive, but I cannot tell you the improvement in the way I sleep and the way I feel. I used to wake up every morning with a terribly sore back. Now I don't. I used to have trouble sleeping through the night--now I don't. These mattresses are not like air mattresses as some of the commenters have suggested; they won't pop or lose their air. We watched the workers install them; they are an engineering miracle. Also, if you are bothered by your husband moving around as I am, you will not feel him moving around (unless, of course, you want to) with the Sleep Number Bed because the two sides of the bed are totally separate and changes made to one side will not affect the other. We are 100% happy with our Sleep Number Bed.
Patricia, we tried them and I wasn't impressed at all, couldn't feel the difference although I heard it when it pumped up or was let out.
We'll head back out tomorrow to try out some more, I'm flabbergasted with all the information there is online about how to purchase a mattress.
Guess this really is a process.
