Legalities of Blogging

Have you ever thought about the legalities of blogging? I haven't really with this blog, it's personal in nature and the photos I use are my own and what I write are my own thoughts, I figure I own it. Well, I'm working on starting a second blog about cruising and the content will come from sources that are not always my own and I've started reading about what I can and cannot print, sometimes even when it's source is quoted. Now I'm a little more than intimidated about publishing this blog. My DIL is an Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Attorney and although she deals mostly with engineering issues (she is also an Electrical Engineer) I'm hoping she can help me to understand all this legal jargon a little more.
In the meantime I'm reading up on this at a great site Electronic Frontier Foundation

Yeah I think about it and I also work in a law firm and read about many blog related law suits that people have file, even in public forum. I don't worry too much about it though on my blog...some of my pictures belong to others and I do give credit to that person. I think as long as you are not making money off of other people's work, then they may not mind. I'll go check out that site, can't hurt. Thanks for this find and I hope you can get your cruise blog up.

The legal ins and outs of blogging can definitely be mind-boggling once you stop and start thinking about them all. I think that as long as you give credit to the source that you use (perhaps with a link back) that you aren't going to get sued for that. Though I could be wrong! These days you just never know!

Good luck with your cruise blog!

From what I know, you can write commentary about other's people's work with no issues. You can quote from other works if you attribute the quote (and a backlink is advisable), but try to stay within the limits of "fair use". Press releases from the cruise lines should be fair game for you to use. I know Royal Caribbean has an online press center.

I think if you approach things from the perspective of trying to be more journalistic you should have no issues.

Can't wait to see the cruise blog.

What I'm concerned about is if you do any kind of advertising, would the authors of information you have used and properly attributed be entitled to a cut?
I think this is one of those areas of the blogosphere that are going to be making big news in the coming years.

A few years ago I had a blog dealing with infertility. While traveling to get some procedures done I had a bad experience with an airline representative. I chose to blog about it and not censor her name. Well, long story short, she apparently enjoyed googling herself and threatened to sue me. I called the airline to report her for being crazy, and even though they handled her, I removed her name anyway.

Since then I have learned I have to be a bit more careful in what I do and do not say. (Although reading my blog it seems I haven't quite grasped that yet.)

Monique, I think we have the potential to get into less legal issues with our personal blogs although I think women can get quite bold (and I love it). I think your blog is wonderful and I think you're wonderful, keep being bold and gorgeous!!

Awww, thank you so much :) And you do the same! And oh, I have been meaning to tell you that I think it is amazing, and quite admirable that you haven't smoked in over 300 days. :)

I'm hoping to have my cruise blog up and running by early this coming week. There are so many things I want to add and so much to talk about......this really is a topic I love and I want there to be another place where information is collectively available about the topic of cruising.
When we get a hankering to cruise, it takes me weeks usually to wade through all the email deals I get, to visit travel sites, etc and go back and forth trying to decide what's the best deal. I guess for me the planning is part of the cruise, it's another instance of the saying "it's all about the journey".

It is good to always be on the safe side. The web is almost a free world and there many things you can borrow and won't get into trouble. What most people need is just permission to use, or credits after use. For each source, it is always good to look around and spot their terms of use.

I have something for you on my blog. I hope you like it,. Please Just take a look at This Post

Thanks
