Does a competitive event such as the Olympics teach our children that anything but a Gold isn't good enough? Don't we need to teach our children and remind our adults that doing the very best you can do on any given day in any given endeavor is GOLD?
The Olympics is an athletic event, it isn't life, it isn't education, it's simply an athletic event, don't get so wrapped up in the outcome, and don't for a moment believe that coming in second, or even 8th isn't a triumph - it is, you went out and gave it your best try and you won.

I really wish they wouldn't fixate so much on the "Medal Count". It's not whether you win or lose in the long run, it's that you did your best and that you were there trying to even begin with.
I think a great lesson is to work hard to achieve your dreams. I like that they are doing snapshots on some of the athletes and telling how long they've worked to achieve the goal of the Olympics and how hard they train. It takes a lot of dedication.
Hi Debra,
I must admit that I do not watch the games any more. Since the games have gone for profit only the true spirit of the olympic games is long dead.
Additionally I do not support the doping and the not-yet-found-pharmaceutical supports. Also I do not support all those battles around resources, sponsorships and ads. This is what the olympic games have evolved into!
Btw - I sent you an e-card per email. I hope very much that you received it.
Warm regards,
Petra
I would make a point of mentioning the athletes who act like good sports: Dara Torres for smiling broadly when winning a silver medal, just happy to be there at 41, Shawn Johnson for behaving maturely when she didn't win a gold. They're out there.
good question. my kid is taught to do her best...whatever that is.
that's the way this world is..who's better than who.
you can't give me a gold medal. all that work for a freaking gold medal. i guess i rather have the endorsements. i'd sell a gold medal in a minute.
But then there are stories like Germany's Oksana Chusovitina who at the age of 33, won the silver medal on vault against girls less than half her age because this is what she knows and it was a way to save her son's life.
What's sad is the parents that push these kids and never let up. Just yesterday a parent of one of the girls on our daughter's softball team had a screaming fit with our first base coach. And these girls are only 12 & 13. Nice.
