The Devastation Left By Hurricane Ike In Houston Texas

My daughter-in-law just sent us these photos of some of the devastation caused by Ike in the Houston and Galveston area (you can click on these photos to get a larger look).

My son and his family still are without power and they have some landscape damage but it's nothing in comparison to these photos. They will be without power until at least this next Monday (which will be 11 days after the storm IF they get it then).
They said that things are slowly returning to normal in Houston with gasoline becoming easier to find, more food in grocery stores and such.

We become so fixated on New Orleans and forget that other coastal communities can be just as devastated. These photos are simply heart-breaking.

Wow honey, I had no idea how bad things were. We don't have television so we haven't seen photos like this. I know I've been praying for everyone affected ever since Ike hit land and continue to pray that things can get back to normal. If that's possible. Thank God they are okay. Big hug honey. :)

I can't imagine actually living through something like that. We have tornadoes here, but they don't usually cause as wide spread damage.

My husband is in Texas helping put back up power lines. He says there are thousands of crews there and they are all working as hard as they can. Hopefully it won't take long to get everyones power back on.

Angel, let me thank you and your husband for what you are doing to ease the inconvenience that hurricane Ike brought the region. You are doing without your husband so he can help people like my son and his family regain their power.
Thank You again.

OMG! That is heart-breaking. Just wiped off the face of the earth. I can't even begin to feel what those families must be going through. I definitely will keep them in my prayers. That is just unbelieveable.

Inside Edition went with the owners of that solitary standing house as they returned to see the destruction. I confess that I shared their tears. The photo of that house you have posted here is, I believe, one of the most dramatic illustrations of the utter destruction that I have seen.

This is terrible. I know this only from pictures. It is an ordeal to go through this. Thanks God, your loved ones are safe.

Good grief ... those photos are shocking and heartbreaking.

I'm glad your family is okay and that their house has held up well. Thank you for sharing those pics. They're pretty hard to look at, but they need to be shared so that people are aware of the devestation. It's amazing how we can live just a few states away yet be totally disconnected from what's going on in our own country. Keep us updated, I hope your family (and all the others) have their power restored sooner rather than later.

Just glad that your son and family are safe and sound. Hope everyone's live will get back to normal as soon as possible.

Glad to hear your family is okay! What a big mess! Since reading "Hurrican Season" I have a new empathy for hurricance victims and survivors. It is a very good book about how Hurrican Katrina affected a high school football team.

Hope your son gets his power back on soon. I am so spoiled, I go nuts when our power is off for even an hour! Can't imagine not having any for 11 days!

Holy smoke. What a tragedy. My friend Bunnygirl lives in Houston, but they were relatively unscathed.

I wish we could do more to help!

oh those pictures are horrible. can't go out there myself, but i wonder how long before those people will be helped?

So much devastation ... no words can really express the pain or feelings of those who are affected. To have years of their lives washed and blown away. No matter how much empathy we have with those who are suffering the effects it is difficult to imagine the terror or real costs of what they are left with. Such trauma would be something that a person would carry with them for their whole lifefime.
So utterly sad.

Hurricanes can be devastating! I think we have it bad with earthquakes but when I see the photos my heart goes out to the people who have been affected. I hope your family is ok. I had no idea that Texas could be so badly hit!
Peace,
Diva

That is just so heartbreaking. They are in my prayers.

You are very welcome. I do miss him when he's gone but I know he's doing something not everyone can do and helping many.

I am sorry to read this article
What did people felt about this?

Such a tragedy...as Patricia said we forget there are other coastal communities that can be effected!!!

My heartfelt best wishes to your family for a speedy return to normalcy...or at least as close as they can come...

So glad your family pulled through okay!

So happy your family is okay. It was certainly rough and it really stinks that people are being forced to go so long without the basics we have come to depend on. My sister is in Conroe and still doesn't have lights in her area and she has no line damage, so we have no idea what's up with that. hopefully things will get better for everyone soon and Galveston will get alot of assistance, it's definitely going to need it.

What horrible destruction, how fierce mother nature can be. I am so glad your family is okay.

Oh my goodness. This is horrible. I'm so glad that most people listened & got out of there before Ike hit so we didn't have some of the problems that Katrina brought.
I pray these people can get back on their feet quickly.

Gosh, that is just heartbreaking!

Those photos were so sad, they really have an impact on you. It is important to see photos like this because they really show the effects of a disaster and make it seem more real - especially to someone like me on the over side of the world.

How awful. I will keep those people in my prayers. I hope things are getting back to normal for your daughter-in-law.

oh my God these are the first pictures I have seen.

Wow I knew it was bad but to see the main bridge...the new bridge to us native Texans...covered in water is hard to imagine.

I will keep your son and family in my thoughts and prayers.

I lost your link and just now found you again via EC.

I am stunned!! My hubby and I delivered a crane down to the port in Houston and saw quite a bit of damage there. But nothing to compare with this.

I am glad to know that your family came out alive. Oh dear but how heart breaking to face this.
