As you can see, I've made it to my 1 Year mark without a cigarette thanks to the quit smoking medication Chantix.
I started smoking steadily when I turned 16 but I started in the 5th grade sneaking them with a girl friend. My parents were both heavy smokers so it's probably almost natural that I picked up the nasty habit (I'm the oldest of 7 children, only 3 of us smoke(d), both girls and one brother). I was allowed to smoke in the house in the open as a teen and then when I went into the Army way back when, the Army put cigarettes into our C-Rations and made a pack of cigarettes 17 cents - yes you read that right, 17 cents.
Is it any wonder that I turned into a pack a day plus smoker? I smoked 36 years with no hope of ever quitting. I half heartedly tried to quit a couple of times and the anxiety I felt, made me pick it right back up.
Last year my son and his wife told us they were expecting their first child and also told me that they would not allow this child to be around me if I smoked..............and then my breathing worsened, my health was deteriorating, my doctor said "You have to quit or risk an imminent heart attack and/or stroke."
I QUIT
The quit wasn't easy but taking the Chantix made it possible to carry through with my quit this time.
I have a beautiful grandson Rudy that is 6 months old and he has never smelled his Nana with cigarettes on her breath or clothes, and his Nana's (Me) health is slowly but surely improving and hopefully I will be around to see my Rudy fall in love and have a baby of his own.
If you are a smoker and you've thought about wanting to quit or you have health issues that would improve if you didn't smoke, call your doctor and ask him/her about whether Chantix is an option for you.
The side effects I encountered were gas, some insomnia, vivid dreams (not nightmares but dreams that were 3 dimensional and in technicolor), dry mouth. These side effects lessened over time (three and a half months on the Chantix). All this without putting more nicotine in my body.
I still have days, sometimes a few days in a row where I think I'd like to smoke a cigarette but I haven't, I just change gears and the urge goes away. I also have family and friends that have supported and encouraged me throughout this year - y'all have been awesome!!!!
I've learned that smoking was more of a habit, a ritual, than it was an addiction. I can see that I wove smoking into everything that happened to me during that 36 years, happy events, sad events, it was my constant companion and the one thing I always turned to...........this was the most difficult aspect of quitting, changing how I handled everything I did in my life.
I QUIT SMOKING 365 DAYS AGO - YIPPPPEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations. I can so relate since I quit over 3 years ago. It does get easier. It took me about 18 months to completely be over smoking. Toughest thing I've ever done. Congratulations. Big hug. :)
Congratulations! May it be the first of many smoke-free years to come! It's over 9 years for me!
I wish I could quit. As I will retire soon and having quieter moments and probably not much stress, I could give it a try. And stop. After 50 years of smoking.
Congratulations.
Many, many congrats, MamaFlo, and also thank you so very much for being such a part of my quit, too. You are an inspiration. You hung in there even when it was tough, and you've shown yourself that you can totally do this, and I'm thrilled for you. Congrats!
Congrats on being smoke free for a year. I stoppedsmoking the hard way cold turkey in 1994. brior to that I had trien the patch and other smoking cesation programs. The point being we all do when works for us.
Congrats! The first year was the hardest for me when I quit, so I know the feeling of accomplishemtn! Here to many more smoke free years!
Congratulations!
A few thoughts:
- Years ago, I read the book, "The Millionaire Next Door." In that book, they talked about this guy whose parents smoked and had spent over $30,000 on cigarettes. In fact, they had spent more money on smoking than on the mortgage of their house!
And if they had instead invested that money, over time, they would have become millionaires.
- I wish my mother would quit. Years ago, I gave up nagging her about it. I decided if she was going to stop, then it will happen, when she makes up her mind, if it doesn't kill her first.
- My father was a smoker. The last eight years of his life, he was hooked up to an oxygen machine. He died of cancer. It was a painful way to live out his Golden Years.
Again, congratulations!
Champagne is chilling!!
It's been 24 years for me. It gets easier after the first 10. ;o)
Congratulations, way to go!!

Wow, MamaFlo, Congratulations! This is such a feat and I am happy for you. It's not easy. It is just noble that you did it for the little one and at the same time knowing that you owe it to yourself to stay healthy for you and your loved ones.
May God bless your heart as you press on. Know that I celebrate with you. :D
Congrats! It is great to hear that you are doing better and feeling better. :)
Congratulations!!
What an amazing accomplishment!!
congratulations! you are an exmaple that one can really quit and stop smoking.its not just about the medication but also the will and desire to succeed.i would love for my husband and mother in law to stop smoking. Our doctor mentions something chantix,so i guess it really works.
That is very cool! Many, many congrats on quitting.
I had to laugh when you talked about the habits that accompany smoking--my sister quit in her thirties, and said the hardest part was giving up Scotch and reading in bed--both habits that she associated with her smoking.
OMG! Congratulations! What an acomplishment! I know, cause I've tried many times before. My pack lasts about three days, but I don't think I'm ready just yet. They say that your mind has to be set, otherwise no pill or patch can help...
Congratulations!!
I thought of you today as I was driving home from the gym. My car windows were closed and yet when I came to a light, there was a fellow in the car ahead of me with a cigarette smoldering in his hand hanging out his window. I could smell it even though all of my windows were tightly closed. "Well, MamaFlo will not be doing that!" I thought. Bravo to you!
Well Done and Congratulations!
Hey, congratulations! One year is no small feat.
Congratulations on a year! That's a huge achievement.
Congratulations! That is a really significant milestone. I've watched a good friend of mine go through this recently (I believe he's now at 2 months smoke-free) and it wasn't easy. But he's off to a good start.
So I definitely understand how big it is that you've hit this landmark.
Congrats!!!!
Congratulations!!! You are 3 months ahead of me, and I still remember visiting your blog often for newly-quit inspiration on quitting. Thanks so much for all you shared with us. I'm so happy you've stayed quit for an entire year
Congrats and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
WhooHooo! That is awesome. I am so happy when someone stops smoking. I am working on a woman now who is smoking. The thing is she is coming to exercise and she is eating healthy and I am praying that eventually the cigarettes will start to taste bad.
Congratulations on this big moment. I am so proud. Yes. Now, you have to keep moving and do a little more to improve your health so that the grandbaby will have you around much longer.
Keep up the great work.
Congrats mamaFlo. keep it up.
Wow! Thats fantastic! I've hit the five month mark now...so I think I'm over the worse of it.
How great is it to be smoke free? :)
congratulations!!! it's a great milestone. here's to many many more :)
Good for you! That is impressive.
That reminds me -- I think it's about time for my wife to try to quit smoking again. It's been a few months.
I've seen that woman quit for over a month before, but the same thing always happens -- one bad weekend with the kids sends her right back to it.
Again, congratulations to you!
AWESOME!!! Congrats!! My hubby has been smoke free for about a week and a half using the same meds. Hopefully he'll have the same success as you :-) :-)
Well done Flo.You have real staying power.I bet you can really taste all that home cooking now.
Congratulations! Keep it up.
Congratulations! It's only been 17 days for me so I've got a long way to go yet. I'm using the patch and the time I crave a cigarette the most is first thing in the morning with my coffee.
After more than 40 years of smoking, I'm hoping to finally kick the habit!
Thank you so much everyone, you each give me strength to go another day, another week, another month and another year without smoking another cigarette.
Good for you, that's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful as my dad would say! Keep up the good work.
MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS to you!!!
Woooooohooooooooo, WTG!!!!
WOW! Congratulations and way to go! I hope you're able to keep it up, I'm sure it's not easy. You're really doing a good job and for all the right reasons.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quitting smoking is so damn hard, and I am so glad you did!
That's so great! Congratulations! It works, huh? I will have to tell my parents.

Congratulations! Deb, enjoy your healthy life now, i think if you are really determined to quite then nothing can stop you no matter what...My husband will be celebrating he's 1 year too next month.
I am SO happy for you and your family. This is one of the greatest gifts you could give yourself and them. I quit smoking about 30 years ago and I am so happy I did. Congratulations on this milestone Flo!
Wow-that is truly wonderful for you! I have never smoked in my life, so can't relate other than what people in my own family do, like my 21 yr. old son (whom I wish would quit)! I know it's hard though-I've had to kick prescription meds and that is a hard one as well.
I'm so happy for you that you did this-keep up the good work!
Congratulations are in order. Personally, I can't quit. I need something to do during coitus, whether it be reading a book or smoking a cigarette.
I'm not sure if you left yet for your trip, but stop by when you have a minute. I have some bling-bling posted for you on 9/26 :o)
Congrats. I am very happy for you. My mother has also smoked since she was 16 I would give anything for her to quit. I will have to show her your blog. Keep up the good work and your Grandbaby is just adorable. I love when they are little like that. At that age they just LOVE you so much.
Congratulations!!!!
Part of my job is working as a smoking cessation advisor and I know just how difficult it can be, you have done really well! :)
Well done. Congratulations, and keep it up.
Congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment, and I'm glad you're seeing the benefits! Congrats on your grandson, too. :)
That is so totally awesome. It is really difficult to quit. I finally quit almost 4 years ago. It was very very hard.
Flo, congratulations ... what a great feeling and strength you have demonstrated. Over The Top Aprons is my new blog; I think I am going to just focus on aprons instead of a variety of things. (Just wanted to let you know who Over The Top Aprons is)
Realizing myself that smoking is more of a habit and ritual was monumental in helping me successfully quit. You were a huge help when I quit and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Way to go, MamaFlo! One year! You deserve that cruise! Hope you're having a blast!
My husband and I both tried Chantrix - with very negative side affects. We both stopped it after a few weeks. The patches make me crave cigarettes more and I don't chew gum under any circumstances. I know hypnosis works for me because I tried it once many years ago. I was so enthralled that it worked that I went back to smoking after 6 months knowing I could always use it again when I was really committed to stopping. Time to look for another hypno-therapist.
Congratulations on your first year!! My husband and I have 30 years under our belt now, and I was smoking about thirty a day, and he was on 40 a day. We quit by using Nicorette chewing gum. I don't know if you can buy it in America, but we have it in the UK, and we found it relatively easy going because the chewing gave us something to do with our mouths, instead of over eating to compensate!
Congratulations Mamaflo! You have been a huge part of my quitting journey. Seeing people like you and Maggie who had a couple months ahead of me made me really believe it could be done! It is so cool to see people achieve success! I am hoping to join you guys in the year zone on November 11th.....seeing you guys make it makes me know I can do it too! Happy first year and I hope to see you get many more to follow!
Peace,
Diva
Very good! Congratulations.

Hello MamaFlo,
I have never smoked in my life but I'm sure it must be one of the most difficult habit to get rid of.
You have done wonderfully during this last year and I'm quite convinced that you will continue on the right path, now that you can see all the benefits of not smoking.
Here's to YOU!
Maria
Congratulations! You are an inspiration to many. Keep up the smoke free days.
I truly do believe and know in my heart that right away, like in the next couple weeks, I want to start this journey of quitting. I read all of the inspiration and wonderful comments that you have received here and think I can do it, yet I am so fearful of failure, that it is my cop out on why I have not truly tried before. At the age of fifty I sometimes think it is just stupid to want to even quit, This is something I should have done years ago. I am so happy however to read a story such as yours. It helps with my intention of a well thought out quit date of November 1st. I can only pray I can get this kind of encouragement and support. God Bless you. It is reading something like this that keeps me inspired to keep up with my quit date!
Moon-Writer of Blog Catalog, however I found your blog on Bloggup!
