Can You Believe This?

This is the Cook County Correctional Facility in Illinois.
The Homeless could only wish to be lucky enough to be housed like this with 3 squares a day.
What are your thoughts?

This appears to be a new facility. It also appears to be a minimum security facility.

I've not told you, but I ran a hard lock facility (all men) and it was the old linear style. What you imagine a prison/jail to look like. I was the commander of that facility until I retired.

This facility won't look like this for very long. There are also tons of laws that govern the operation of these facilities. It's quite something.

The homeless often break laws so they can spend the winter inside these type of facilities. The judges are very aware of this as well. It's a different look at humanity for sure.

Have a terrific day. :)

According to Snopes.com, those images are actually the Justice and Detention Center in Leoben, Austria.

From what I've heard about Cook County Jail, you DO NOT what to ever go there. It's an over-crowded hell-hole and part of the largest court system in the nation.

I had no idea this information was fraudulent, it came from a reliable source in Los Angeles - hmmmmm.
My apologies.

Sandee - that is utterly amazing! I would love to hear more about what you did.

that is far better that the inmates have it at the cuyahoga county jail.

I saw a documentary on the real Cook County Jail... it was and Lock Down special and it didn't look like this. This looks like a place where one might train CIA agents or something.

Cook County Jail is simply not a nice place and is also not this place.

In general I am opposed to inmates living too comfortable of a lifestyle, but there also need to be some privileges to take away as punishment in order to control the population, too. It's a balance, I think.

I remember the big debate when this was built. Taxpayers paid a lot of money to build that and it's nicer than many hotels. Commit a crime and get room service. It's pathetic.

I can see that this place is new it also seems cold and stark. I wonder how many recidivists they have? This has to be the ultimate thing that we all need to know. It isn't a matter of just punishing people - that really is the fact that their freedom has been taken away from them. The main aim of any correctional facility is to make sure that they do not commit any crimes in the future. Much of this has to do with the quality of staff that prisons or correctional facilities employ. Many of those who commit crimes in the first place have never been taught the difference between right and wrong from a very early age. Add to this they often can't get employment and begin taking drugs - we are left with the consequences - the dregs of life - to mop up and sort out. Problem being that no one ever appears to want the job of trying to reform and put back on the straight and narrow.

Too many people use a stick when they perhaps need to offer a carrot - the consequence being that light-weight criminals become tough and hard-nose ones - these then become a danger to us all.

We have not stepped so very far away from those dreadful days that William Wilberforce tried to steer us all from. Many do not appear to realise that if a person is always treated badly like rubbish then that is what they will act like.

It's not that I think that a criminal should have a soft option but there should at least be the tools in place to make them better people - otherwise, what is the point of locking someone up in the first place? I believe that there should be apprenticeships offered whereby they can be taught a trade and perhaps pay some compensation either directly to the person who they may have committed an offence towards or if not into a central fund that could then pay out to anyone that has been affected. They should also be shown the consequences of their actions and others actions first hand - they should be made to develop a conscience ... may be then the world would or at least could be a better place for everyone - including them!

I agree with you Polly, but I think it goes beyond the inmates themselves but also goes to some bad people that are guards and such. When the guards can be bought and allow inmates to smuggle in drugs and such it's no wonder.
I think the criminal justice system in the world needs an overhaul and like the social services I don't know where to even begin.

WOW, I know it's something in Austria or whatever Snopes says... but WOW anyway!

Folks do try to get locked up during winters from what I heard as well for shelter. I don't blame them.

All it needs is astroturf and it'd look like our state-of-the-art, billion-dollar schools. :-p I want a bailout.

With any luck at all, the recently impeached Illinois governor will spend some time in a correctional facility. He's probably got the penthouse suite.

I'm glad to read the comments and learn this is NOT the Cook County jail or detention center or whatever. It certainly caught my eye, though.
