Michael Phelps, I hope you loose all your endorsements! You were stupid and certainly not above the law. You are not a role model for the youth of the world.
You certainly didn't refuse the money your endorsements were bringing you because you were 23 years old, don't feed the world your sorry arsed excuse now. You knew better, you know that drug use is illegal.
I'm sick and tired of seeing the world put athletes on a pedestal and throwing huge sums of money at them, making them feel like they are above it all. These are people, fallible people, they are going to make mistakes BUT let this be a testament to the fact that because they are fallible they are not worth the money being thrown at them in pay and endorsements.
Michael Phelps isn't the only or the last athlete to screw up, there are notable ones every football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, soccer, boxing season.
We need to stop being their adoring public!

I don't idolize a one of them. That goes for actors and actresses and the list goes on and on. These people are just people, and they don't thing the rules apply to them.
Have a terrific day. :)
I think it's very sad that he broke the law and tarnished his reputation.
Unfortunately he is just one of those types that think they are above the law, just as other athletes, actors, singers, and even royality.
I'm not defending anybody,Sometimes it is the stupidity of youth some times it is I doing it to fit in better.( did some of the stupid stuff like that when I was young.)
When I was young I did stupid things too but I also was fully aware of what I was doing and what would happen if I'd gotten caught.
He did something stupid and he got caught, now he needs to pay the piper.
I'd not heard anything about this, so your post prompted me to google what was going on... my first thought was well it's just marijuana... but reading on, it seems the bong pic was taken after having come back from Beijing with 8 medals in hand... and that while marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug, it *is* on the list of banned substances. Okay, then that's really really stupid, Phelps. Oh, and he took part in an Anti-Doping campaign? Wow. You made some reeeeeeally poor choices there, boy!
oh crap he used drugs? i didn't get a chance to read the story yet.
he is stupid.
They are human after all. I remember someone once told me, "if you want to test a person's character, give him or her power." It's a bit corny but the quotation from Peter's uncle in Spiderman speaks some truth, "with great power comes responsibility."
I've read a little about Michael Phelps, and he's what I think is his situation.
Phelps was abandoned by his father and was raised by his mother. Also, he's a swimmer who spends long hours in the pool. Most swimmers are introverts. Phelps is also a dork. He has diminutive social skills, and does not feel particularly comfortable around people, especially a crowd.
But since he is a well known athlete, he cannot admit this. He does not want people to think he is shy, especially women.
So one of the ways he knows how to cope, or overcome his shyness and lack of social skills, is to get drunk and smoke dope when he's around other people, especially strangers, and especially women he wants to impress. Many, many people are like this by the way.
Now, I am not saying this is a good excuse for what Phelps did. And he is likely sorry he got caught, not sorry he actually did it. A few years ago, he also got a DWI.
He came out with a public apology because it hurts him and his team of handlers in the area of endorsements and money.
Again, not a wise choice on the part of Phelps.
Hopefully, he'll one day come to accept his shortcomings and learn to deal with them the right way. Then he can truly be a good role model for kids and adults alike.
I agree with Paul's evaluation. I don't condone Phelps' behavior, but I can understand it.
To add to what Paul said, Michael also has significant ADHD which he cannot treat with Ritalin or Adderal because both are banned for athletes (never mind that these stimulants don't act as stimulants in the normal sense when a person has ADHD). I don't condone his behavior either, but it is pretty normal (i.e. STUPID!) young adult behavior. Did we think he'd be immune to that because he's an amazing athlete?
He's a 23 year old man for God's sake, not 13. He's old enough to know better and old enough not to make excuses for his bad behavior.
