How Do I Get Rid of These Lines?

I'm almost 54 and I need a rescue for the lines/wrinkles on my face, especially those around my mouth (not the smoking lines above my lips - damn cigarettes) but those on either side of my mouth and of course the lines under and on the sides of my eyes.

I'll admit that I've always been on the tom-boy side and I've never taken good care of my skin. When I was an adolescent (a long time ago) I had acne but I was fortunate not to have too many lasting scars from enlarged pores.

I'm using Clinique products but I'm wondering what other women are using, what have you found to be the most effective for your skin and especially the lines/wrinkles?

OMG, I'm getting old!!
Do you call them lines or wrinkles?

lines or wrinkles,i call them badges of honor for weathering the storms of my life.I hope that you are having a great weekend!

Peter (Worldman): said...

Just leave them as they are. As Mike says, they are the honor of your life. The storms, the springs, the summers, the autumns, the winters and the sunshines of your life. And, from what I think, you had more sunshine than rain.

I agree with the other two gentleman, probably that is the different between man and woman, to just leave those lines or wrinkles alone. Citing a quotation from Roosevelt Eleanor, "Beautiful young people are the work of nature and beautiful old people are the work of art." And I believe that for bloggers who know you, they will agree with me that you are a beautiful person.

You can called them Character Lines, Sounds better to me:-) However some of us are not ready for them yet (Maybe At My Granny's age, 92). Sell a product that I use that really turns back time. Line reducer, it has immediate results and continued use improves the Character lines.

As much as I want to agree and tell you to wear them proudly, I couldn't follow that advice. hehe I use Oil of Olay Total Effects - and I love it. I only use the face cleaner wipes (where you add water) and the lotion - but it's wonderful. Makes my skin look so young and healthy - and it's so soft!

Ok. Enough of this commercial. I think you should use whatever makes YOU feel good - and if the lines/wrinkles are still there, who cares? Better than the alternative! lol

My grandma recommended a few things to me that really work - they are very old-fashioned but lovely. The first is something that you may be able to buy off the shelves of a chemist/pharmacy or if not they should know how to make it up for you:
Glycerin and Rosewater. The second is the old fashioned version of Oil of Ulay or Olay as they have strangely changed its name to.

Wash your face with something like Dove - unscented cream bar (I like the sudsy action as I think it makes me feel cleaner! Lol) then gently pat on the Glycerin and Rosewater and leave it for about ten minutes - then lightly splash it off with cod water. Pat your face dry and gently rub in a little Oil of Ulay. (NIGHT AND MORNING)
After as little as one to two weeks you will notice an astonishing difference. It beats any creams on the market - fine wrinkles disappear completely and deep ones go much much softer.
Best of all both products are fairly cheap and last a vey long time.
The Glycerin and Rosewater is also good for getting rid of the dry skin on elbows, knees and heels - if you use it daily you will find that these areas - especially your heels go as soft as a youngsters - not quite baby soft but very nearly - the wrinkles and hard skin also diminish like magic!

:)

Should have read what I had written - of course - IT SHOULD BE COLD WATER!!!!
THE HEEL I should also have made clear that the deep etched dry lines of the heels and the hard skin soften and disappear.

I like Olay products. I can remember back in the '70's reading about a new product, Oil of Olay moisturizer. I had to ask my drug store to order it for me. Now they have many products--I like the Olay Age Defying Age Renewal Daily Moisturizer. I think also, it has a lot to do with genetics. My Dad died at 92 and looked like mid-70's. Most people think I am mid-'50's, but I will be 70 in June (groan).

I certainly understand how much went into giving me these lines/wrinkles/badges of honor/character, etc but the problem is that some of those issues (and a host of new ones) continue to bring more on or cause the ones I have already to deepen.....I guess that also goes with the snow on the roof.

I do know that having blogging friends like y'all sure has made a significant difference in the way I view each day and maybe it's that that will decrease these things on my face and in my hair.

A girl can hope right?

Avon has some pretty good products for that. The Anew Clinical line has some great stuff for age defying and wrinkle correcting. Check it out at my online store: www.youravon.com/christinafanning

I've never tried it before, but it does have some great reviews. And they do have a 100% money back guarantee if you don't like it.

I am 51 yrs young and I know this sounds gross but, I don't use anything expensive or fancy. I have used preperation H for a few years now for eye cream. I swear, I tell you the truth, this works! People tell me all the time I can't be a grandma, I look so young!

I second the rose water/glycerin idea. I used to work in the cosmetics industry, so I know that you can make your own stuff for much less. I mix half rose water and half witch hazel as a cooling splash and to clean off any soap residue after washing my face.

I use a soap that you can't get in the states (new business idea?) called savon d'alep. The first soap ever made was in Aleppo, Syria. So it's the original recipe, which is simply olive oil and bay laurel. The bay laurel cures any kind of skin problem, even eczema. I use that on my face because of how gentle and moisturizing it is. I sometimes use it in my hair and it doubles the volume of my hair, but it can feel a little heavy.

Then...there's always Retin-A or any of those other natural peeling products (alphahydroxy acids). After a few weeks of treatment, your skin is amazing, BUT, you look like a poster child while peeling and you have to never go out in the sun again because your skin becomes extra sensitive to the sun. But no more wrinkles!

Don't do laser treatments - I have seen many horror stories that resulted in permanent scarring.

Debbie,
the lines around my mouth were driving me mad too.

I have used stuff for my skin almost all of my life. My mother was a real freak about taking care of your skin.

But, still at 52 I do have wrinkles. I started using Oil Of Olay Definity and Olay filling and sealing about 2 months ago.

I can really see a change. You put the fill and seal on just before any powder, make-up, or, just before you go out and it does seem to puff out those tiny crevices!!

It works for me!!

Happy Sunday!:-)

I like Olay Total Affects. It's not greasy and wears very well. It's also scent free and fairly inexpensive.

When I can afford to splurge, I like Arbonne's RE9 line. I use the eye cream and the face lotion. It's probably about the same prie as Clinique.

Goodness, we all seem to use a massive range of products. One stands out amongst the crowd - Oil of Olay - my mother (would've bee 86 this year) used this for years - I remember as a child when it came in a glass bottle, black top and it was a pale pink in colour.

I also use Olay Rengerist. I'm a real stickler for cleaning too - I use Olay shower cleansers and scrubs.

Keep us looking great.

No one mentioned 'botox'!!!

Cheers and have a great day
Julie :-)

My mom has used Mary Kay night cream for years and she looks fabulous for her age.
It also heals sunburn overnight. I wonder what is in it? :)

I am reading all the tips here and very informative. I am going to be 53 in May, and I have the after effects of acne in my younger years. I have wrinkles too.

Oh, Flo--you are so beautiful the way you are!! Those are the reminders of all the smiles and laughs you've had over the years--like everyone else has been saying. Ask your dermatologist what they recommend--that's your best bet. Maybe a dermabrasion or something would work if you are truly bothered by them.

I had a face lift. That helped a lot. Out side of that I wouldn't know. I'll be 58 in September.

Have a terrific day. :)

I call them "character lines". I think they are beautiful. They show that people have lived, experienced emotions, and aged with grace. I'm sure your face is beautiful. Just keep it moisturized.

I have to admit that I never thought I would ever consider using any medical treatment to combat the signs of aging - like surgery - but I was talked into trying a series of chemical peels. I have to say I'm so glad I did because it really turns the clock back be a decade or more. It is an expensive thing to do and for the days immediately after, you are a scary sight, but it is really worth it! I just wish I could afford to have them done on a regular basis. You have to see a plastic surgeon for the treatment. I would say Mama Flo that you deserve to treat yourself for that major accomplishment of quitting smoking!

I've been using natural advantage for about 6 mos now and have seen a huge difference - I buy it online, I don't think it is sold in stores

It is never to late to start taking care of your skin. A couple things you can do is 1) buy a face lotion (olay has one) with SPF in it. Put it on every morning. 2) Watch out for face products that have alcohol in them, so many do and this dries your face out. One brand that doesn't and is pretty cheap is St. Ives. 3) Wear sunglasses whenever you go out 4) wash your face before you go to be and put a night cream on - TRY to sleep on your back - sleeping on your stomach/face will also cause wrinkles.

I never knew I had so much to say about face lotion.

They are called roads in your map of life.
Unique Characteristics that only you have:)

Welcome to the human condition sweety.

I inherited my fathers John Wayne forehead wrinkles...which I have hated all my life until he passed away. Now when I look in the mirror and squint...I see my dad looking back at me saying..."now you know why I passed these onto you"

Just look at your wrinkles as something only you really see.

Have a very positive day!

I am 54 and my lines literally disappeared when I began using St. Ives Mineral Therapy. That's right, a $4.00 bottle of body lotion. I have gone through them all - Clinique, Clarins, Lancome - you name it.

Give it a try. Good luck!

I wish you luck with those wrinkles. I use the estee lauder products....when I remember. Sometimes it takes so long that I just skip it...cause I'm just too sleepy.
