We are going on an 11 night Alaskan cruise soon and we've started packing - yeah I have a staging area and packing lists - Lol!!
I've gained a little weight in the recent few weeks (probably about 4 to be exact - weeks not pounds) and I needed a new bathing suit to take (no I won't be out at the pool but I will be in the Therma pool inside the spa area) - well I ordered it from Lands End (took measurements at home and all) but it arrived today and I had to tug the damn thing on. This is a suit that’s suppose to reduce your size 1 (haaahaahaaa - can you hear me laughing) and it's probably done that but in the process I've found it difficult to breath (and the breathing issue is what caused me to gain the weight in the first place - meds for asthma and COPD and early onset Emphesma - damn those cigarettes). I'm sitting here in that form hugging suit trying to stretch it out, hoping to stretch it out cause I just don't want to have to return this for the next larger size. Understand that I've always been a little bits of a thing and my age and health issues have made this different.
Okay, back to the packing.......
Since we live in South Texas and have a few cold weeks out of the year (at least we think they are cold) we don't have much in the way of winter clothing or coats so those have had to be purchased also, so much planning and packing.
This is an 11 night cruise but we are only packing for 5 nights and we're going to utilize laundry and dry cleaning onboard what with the extra cost of luggage and toting lots of luggage through the airport and to the cruise ship. Packing this way is a challenge as there are 2 sets of clothes a day that are necessary and we are only taking 2 carry-ons and 1 check-on bag (in additon to my laptop bag and camera bag).
In addition to the packing, we now need to worry about the Swine Flu as our ship will be coming from a run in South America/Mexico. This is of great concern seeing as both my husband and I have health issues that would be seriously compromised should we be exposed.
This will be our first cruise to Alaska although our 9th cruise overall. Our cruise starts in San Francisco and goes to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Hubbard Glacier, Sitka, Victoria BC and ends in Vancouver. We have 2 major excursions planned and then will be on our own for the other stops. We try to never overdo the sight seeing though as feel the cruise and cruiseship itself is a destination. I will be posting while onboard.
Okay, it's time to pry this suit off my body for now and give the muscles a rest - Lol Again.

I can so relate about the bathing suit. I've got a couple that fit just like that.
I hear you about the suitcases too. The mix and match outfits really help don't they.
I'm guessing the ship will be cleaner than it has ever been. Disinfected too. Just saying.
Just have a great time. :)
Thanks for the chuckle, Deb! I don't even dare to try mine on yet for this season.
I would think with the publicity that cruise ships have gotten in the past with people being sick - I bet they are taking extra precautions everywhere with the cleaning. It's probably one of the safer times to go on one.
You must be so excited - look forward to your posts as you go along.
Enjoy!!
Kathy
OH Deb...I am SO jealous. Jealous of the trip AND the fact that you're smaller than I am. I am not even LOOKING at bathing suits and haven't since I quit smoking 11 years ago. I gained SO much weight. I have mid-stage emphesema and chronic bronchitis so I know just how rough that is! Take care, have a wonderful time and I agree with Sandee and kml that the ship should be ultra-clean and germ-free! Did you book the helicopter flight? MIL said it was FANTASTIC! Take lots of pix!!! God speed my friend!
Oh,Those B-suits! I have a couple that I like, but I hate shopping for them. Enjoy your cruise. Can't wait to hear all about it.
Enjoyed talking to you.We had a riot with our memories. Just a couple of forgetful people. And hubby really can't remember,Should of known better not to listen to Him!!!
Anyways you and your hubby have a Grand Old Time!!!!
I wish you a pleasant cruise and a good time.
At the same time I would like to take leave from you for a few days. I might not be dropping on your Entrecards in the next few days, as I am travelling to my duty station in Sri Lanka and, from experience, it will take time to setup my internet connection.
But I will be around soon again.
sounds like a lot of fun. The trip I mean ;) I cannot stand at all to have tight things on. I had the breathing issues with the cancer and it's never been quite the same. I hate anything tight around my chest/neck area. *shudder*
Wow at least you can get into one, lol! I would look like one of the whales in the ocean, lol! I hope you folks have a wonderful and safe trip! God bless.

Let me know how the cruise goes. I will be taking the 11 day in August.
Have a great trip! I hate bathing suit shopping. I have never tried it online, maybe it would be better.
I cannot believe you even mentioned 'swimsuit'! What an evil curse word.
I'm in the Houston area...how about you?
You're taking the cruise I've always wanted to take. I actually thought I'd make it when one of my daughters started college in Sitka. Dang the homesickness and boyfriend that brought her home before I got a chance to visit!!
Certainly sounds like it's going to be one great trip ahead. Hope you have a wonderful trip.
oh this reminds me that I also needed a new one. The ones that would really fit to my size now.=)
sounds like an exciting trip.keep safe.
Mama Flo if you want a lil pro advice on packing light for alaska let me give you a few simple rules.
1. pick a color scheme ; Light or Dark.
2. Pick basic pieces that will go combine for maximum wearability.
like weight items work well together.
3. 1 fancy dress is enough
4. one nice pair of slacks or dressy skirt is enough
5. wash undies eachnite in your stateroom and hang to dry overnite.
if you have a balcony use the back of the chairs to hang those special items and they'll dry fast and smell unbelievably fresh.
6. take a small multiuse laundry soap and body soap like Dr Bronners, either the bar or a small liquid will serve all your washing needs. i suggest the lavender scent.
7. take a few small spray bottles, which contain a. laundry refresher and wrinkle remover spray b. a chamomile citronella spray to give yourself a headstart on the blackflies and skeeters in the yukon portion of your trip.
your basic hair conditioner will act flawlessly as laundry softner as well after a wash.
my tips is to wash your undies while you shower, then when you put your conditioner on your hair put a bit on the laundry and then squeeze and rinse. works flawlessly. after doing this you will start to just do it eachday.
also a mini spray of White Vinegar. yes it's useful for everything from smells to sunburn and cuts. also laundry and hair rinse. white vinegar is the travelers best tool.
I have a few other tips like take a ziploc bag of bags in various sizes; which you will use throughout your trip, and recycle; and also a nice plastic collapsable shopping bag to keep your shoreside purchases in. best ones are from ikea and have a long and short strap on them. I modified mine to put the velcro dots on the closure to keep it closed tightly or partly open when it's filled.
if you need more alaska info hit me up as I can give you a few tips, and suggestions. i was one of the top alaska agents for aaa when I worked as a leisure travel agent.
you know where to find me. :)
I tried, I really tried to do just one check on bag but I have failed miserably. Right now I don't care, I'm so excited I could pee in my pants!!
Right now I'm worried that our bags won't make it with us as we only have a 51 minute layover at our only stop on the way to SF and it involves a terminal change - what do you think the odds are?
Thought I left you a message; but then it vanished right before my very eyes. Yikes
Had to laugh about the bathing suit, I switched to purchasing from Lands End at the suggestion of my daughter and got one with a skirt bottom. Much better for real women!
Imagine it...doesn't have an EC widget, doesn't seem to be a blog, seems to be one big ad?
Also no EC widget on On the street by Paul....
Sandy
Have a good trip, hope you'll swing by for a visit. Welcome mats always out
