I enjoy watching “some” television but I’m increasingly disillusioned with the advertising and the programing of most channels. No doubt I should remind you that I’m 54 years old and started out young with no television in the house and black and white picture when we finally did get TV, and the few times a week that we were given permission to watch television instead of playing outside or doing chores we watched the likes of Howdy Doody, Red Skelton, and Wagon Train. Adults had begun watching Peyton Place and Soap Operas. My mother didn’t allow us to watch either, she said the story line was for adults only (of course this kind of attitude drove teenagers to have to see what they were missing).
How did we move to Sex In The City, Taxi Cab Confessions, commercials about erectile dysfunction, menstrual periods, birth control, cursing, adults half or fully undressed, or dressed so seductively and suggestively?
I'm not a prude and I've been known to be able to take any topic and turn it into something sexual (I grew up with 5 brothers and their friends), but most of the time I talk this way with girlfriends or my husband not in a public forum and certainly not around small children.
Is all this in your face sexual content really ncessary? Is everything in the end about the almighty buck?

Perhaps it is true that shows like Howdy Doody, Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best really did have subliminal messages embedded throughout their programs? Hey, I know that I am not quite right in the head, and I used to watch all of them!
Sex sells. That's the bottom line. I don't have television anymore and I don't miss it one bit.
Have a terrific day. :)
Deb you need to use my trick!! i don't do commercials at all.
I find the program I want to watch and then I find another program that is of interest to me also.
I simply hit the back button on my remote when the commercials start!!
I hope you have a great week!!
Jackie:-)
I'm from your era, only a few years older - luckily I was old enough to watch Peyton Place and I loved every minute of it. But yes, TV and the commercials nowadays have gotten so explicit and are not suitable for young children who soak that stuff up like a sponge.
Unfortunately it's only going to get worse before it gets better.
Every time I see a Viagra commercial I think of my Grandma. She'd have turned blue and fell off the chair had she lived to see such a thing.
i'm afraid that the almighty dollar is exactly what the world has come to. very sad indeed.
The erectile dysfunction commercials are some of the worst! Even though they never say outright what they are selling, they are all over the place during the day. Imagine having to explain them to a child!
Here, here! Good post. I feel the exact same way (and I grew up with *only* 4 brothers).
This crap in our culture has me on a rant lately, too-- I've got a slew of posts geared up for it. It's funny, but you're not the only one I've seen suddenly speaking out about this. I think enough is enough. Whatever happened to respect and dignity??
i very rarely watch tv anymore, all those chanels to surf through and nothing worth watching. tv has definately gone down hill
If it wasn't for my son I probably wouldn't have cable either.
The commercial that really got me was the woman laying on fresh mowed grass in an evening gown for the Honda lawnmower!
The United States is one of only two countries that permits direct-to-consumer drug advertisements. The other is New Zealand. While the ads may cost about 4 billion annually to run they are estimated to pull in about 8 billion in sales. But, part of that 4 billion is allowed to be written off on taxes as an advertising expense.
All the while people are running to their doctors wanting the latest drug to be advertised. The question lies in ~ how many people will suffer from some irreversible side effect many years down the road?
It makes me mad when those ads come on. How do I explain it to my children?
The commercial I find really distasteful is that product that supposedly is medicare approved. For lack of a better description, it is a pump for, well, you know where. And one of the happy testimonials is from a guy who scarily looks like Howdy Doody.
I agree and think about it all the time myself. I have four young daughters and I want to keep them innocent for as long as I can. Things like this surely do not help.
Sadly, everything IS about the almighty buck, and we are seriously considering doing away with television entirely. We hardly ever watch, and when we want to, nothing of quality is on. When we do find something on that is decent, we have to mute or change channel at every commercial. The commercials on regular channels are absolutely inappropriate for my 5 year old (she exclusively watches PBS Kids and Noggin), and the the medical ones scare her immensely. I am SOOOO tired of having to mute at every Enzyte, Extenz, Lava love lines, sex party, sugardaddie.com, and pharmaceutical commercial that I am ready to throw the box out the window. This doesn't even mention the class action commercials about whether you or a loved one have died from taking such and such medication and need to sue in court. (I am 37, so grew up with television, but I miss the days when Three's Company was the least tasteful show out there.)
AND @mincognita: speaking of grandmothers, how about that atrocious Trojan Vibrating Touch commercial where the older lady says "relax girls, you can get them right online...that's where I got mine"
How does one explain to the kiddies what, exactly, they are so excited about getting online?
I agree and whats worse is that even with the TV rating system you still see adult content commercials during G rated shows.
Here, here! I totally agree and get so tired of seeing all the sex. Lately, even the commercials I feel I have to mute or even change the channel if our daughter is in the room. Not only are they overly sexual, but I feel inappropriate for young eyes.
sewingmom
What really sucks is watching a great movie with your mom and all of a sudden Bob pops up grinning as big as you please talking about his enormous you know what thanks to Enzyte!!!
Couldn't agree with you more!
Thanks to the DVR, I zap through the commercials. For show content, the change channel and off button work just fine. I watch very little TV.
Well said! I am embarrassed to watch TV with the kids around. Really, it has all gone too far. What truly amazes me is the number of youth who watch soap operas. If that is where they get ideas about relationships, we are in deep trouble.
Thanks...nice...

Good post. I wrote one time about the best shows in the world, ones that young people seem to know nothing about: I Love Lucy, Red Skelton, Howdy Doody and even the more recent Golden Girls, to name a few. These were so entertaining. I've never seen an episode of Sex in the City, The Simpsons or Desperate Housewives. Perhaps that makes me boring but I've never had any interest in them.
Americans are obsessed with sex. Or more accurately, they are obsessed with being shocked by sex. Why do you think Bill O'Reilly keeps showing us footage of teenage girls being bad at spring break? Why do Republicans believe in the sanctity of marriage but cheat on their wives? Why are rumors about who is and who is not gay sell so many newspapers and magazines.
I think if we stopped obsessing about sex and just had sex things would go a lot better.
In fact, I think I'm going to start right now. Excuse me.
Happy weekend Deb!!
I think I am immune to them anymore. But I can remember how boiling mad I was years ago, when this all started with maxi pad and douche commercials first came on tv. I can remember my then 5 yr old son looking at me and asking me what they were. Then a couple of years later, the sex phone chat commercials came on, its been all down hill ever since.
Now, because I have little ones again, the only channel that is on tv is the preschool, noggin channel. I'm not a prude at all, but I think something needs to be done about these commercials. They are getting to be ugly vulgar.
Hello! Just dropped in after a visit to Don's (Beyond Left Field)... I'm 59ish and do I ever remember (sort of) what you wrote about! Those t.v. shows and black and white!!! My favorite was to come home from school and watch "The Millionaire" in the evening's... oh how I waited to get that check from John Baresford Tipton... I swore I wouldn't tell anyone where it came from... now I dread having to watch most of what's on the tube... I head for the Science Channel, DIY, HGTV,... NO REALITY TV!!!!! That as far from reality as possible!
Anyway, nice visiting you!! I'll be dropping by again!
In one word "YES". I thought I was the only one noticing the spike in sitcoms with homosexuals, promiscuity and blatant references to balls, boobs, condoms and orgasms.
Not that there's anything wrong with that......(necessary disclaimer so my tires don't get sliced) BUT, what did we laugh at years ago? I thought it was funny then.
Let's just blame it all on the fact that we've become accepting of SO MANY things, (thank you ACLU)that it takes more and more shock value to entertain us.
I could also point the finger at National Geographic. If I see one more baby antelope being brought down by one more lion in the name of entertainment, I'm taking my gun to the tower.
I was thinking about this the other day myself. It seems like all I see is ED commercials. I get tired of seeing them. The only time I don't have to worry is when I watch PBS so most of the time it's what I watch.
I agree. Our culture churns out this stuff, and it detracts from who we are and who we could become. It's such a waste, to have lost ALL innocence and make 95% of our entertainment titillate with nudity, greed, murder and adultery. And sani-pads...
Too bad we hold nothing sacred. And I don't mean that in the sense of traditional religious doctrine.
The beauty of the remote is the ability to change the channel when the commercials come on.
The Viagra commercials don't bother me as much as the violent previews during a sporting event I'm watching with my kids.
